Ucapan Naib Canselor Sempena Majlis Perasmian UMTs International Day 2015 pada 23 Oktober 2015

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Salam 1 Malaysia, Salam 1 UMT,

Dan Salam Sehati Sejiwa

APPRECIATION AND THANKS

1.         Alhamdulillah. We are thankful to Allah S.W.T, upon whose Grace we are here today at this friendly sports meet between Universiti Malaysia Terengganu’s local and international staff and students, organised by the recently established International Centre of UMT. I thank you all, especially our guests from other IPTs, for attending this sports event which marks the launch of UMT’s International Day 2015 that is part of this our 13th convocation festival.

2.         This international sports meet it is part of a two event-programme that has been painstakingly planned and organised as a celebration of UMT’s international community and culture. The follow up event will be the held tomorrow evening, which I’m sure you will not want to miss either.

3.         Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to thank all the participants of the international football and netball matches that are to be held for the first time ever in UMT. I hope that it will not be the last. Instead, may it be the beginning of a long and beloved tradition, and may it be that every year from now on, two teams – one comprising staff and students from Malaysia and another team comprised of our international community – will meet each other on this field to kick or toss off a match aimed not only to decide a winner, but mainly to find borderless goodwill, friendship and camaraderie between all members of our UMT community.

4.         In recognition of all your efforts, I would also like to thank the members of the organising committee, who have all worked so hard to make this event a reality.

THE IMPORTANCE & SIGNIFICANCE

OF INTERNATIONALIZATION AT UMT

Ladies and gentlemen,

5.         UMT has always prided itself on its sizeable international community. Although this university was only granted its charter just a few years ago, its historical and traditional ties in previous incarnations ensured that the relationships nurtured between this university and those in other countries remained strong and unshaken. First known as the Centre for Fisheries and Marine Science in 1979, this institution was renamed Universiti Putra Malaysia Terengganu. It remained so until 1999, after which it became known as University College of Terengganu until 2007, when it became the University College of Science and Technology of Malaysia, and then finally, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu was officially chartered on February 1st, 2007. So despite the fact that UMT is very young, only 8 years old, this institution is, in fact, much older, having been around in 1979. And this much history means that many relationships and friendships have been forged in the decades since this institution’s conception.

6.            This can be proven by the fact that we have a wide global network, which can be seen in the numbers of memoranda of understanding and memoranda of agreement that have been inked between us and international universities, together with local strategic partners. Through these memoranda, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu has further nurtured relationships with higher education institutions with agencies in other countries, such as Japan, Indonesia, the United States of America, Vietnam, France, Australia, Thailand, Italy, and many more.

Ladies and gentlemen,

7.            The fact that UMT’s niche areas relate to oceanography and aquatic resources has also contributed to the continuing interest from institutions from other countries to form a relationship with us, as in this country, this is a trait unique only to UMT. The fact that this university also has an institute that has been certified by the Malaysian Ministry of Education as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence, namely the Institute for Oceanography and the Environment, or INOS, has contributed even more to the formation of new friendships with other universities abroad that have similar focuses.

Honoured guests,

8.            Universiti Malaysia Terengganu is constantly on the lookout for new bridges to build between us and institutions abroad, whereby we look to build a good international reputation, strengthen our networking and going further to achieve a bigger international footprint. We have and are in the process of exchanging staff and students for research and teaching, we share academic materials and publications, we have held technical meetings and conferences, there have been participation in academic organizations, as well as joint research and publications.

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CLOSE TIES & FRIENDSHIPS

Ladies and gentlemen,

9.        Having said all that, at the end of the day, the most visible and important result of internationalization is the close personal ties that are formed between the local and international communities of UMT. And this is what I see before me here today. The two teams each for football and netball are comprised of members of the local and international communities, as are the spectators and supporters who have come to support them. And this encapsulates the very idea of internationalization, which sees us all coming together and working as one general community, for the benefit of all. Even though this is a friendly match, I know that the players will all show their best game. For this is why we are all here: to become the best that we can be, with the help of friends from all over the world.

CLOSING

10.    As a final word, I would like to thank all the players, supporters and spectators for coming to watch this match this morning, to celebrate our second annual international gathering and officially declare, with great pleasure and Bismillahirrahmanirrahim..the International Day 2015 open!

         Thank you.

         Wabillahi Taufik Wal Hidayah

         Wassalamualaikum waramatullah wabarakatuh.
